Self Care Habits for 2019

January can be a tough month. What with those pretty twinkling Christmas lights coming down, long cold days, and trying to make December’s pay last long enough. Add it the pressure to make resolutions and lose weight its a tough month. Which is why making time for some self-care is important. I know I’m very guilty of letting looking after myself slide down to the bottom of the priority list. But it really should be right up to top. After all, you can’t pour from an empty cup. This is why I want to start incorporating some self-care habits into my routine this year. I’m sure there is lots I can do but here are a few of the things I want to with to make me a priority in 2019.

Create a Routine

I’m fortunate that my job allows me to work flexible hours. But that can bring its own challenges and the biggest is the lack of a consistent routine. One day I could be working from home all day and the next I’m in the college teaching and then the next I’m out on visits all day. This year I want to create a little more structure to my week, whilst still making the most out of my flexibility. Right now I’m thinking this will involve blocking tasks for certain days. Whilst my teaching days are fixed I will set days for visits and working from home. Hopefully keeping this the same every week will help create more structure. I also want to create a calming morning routine, getting up at the same time every day. I’m not the best at getting out of bed, especially during the cold dark winter months but I know I’m more productive and relaxed on the days I get up when the alarm goes off. This is something I need to work on but hopefully can work the habit of getting up at the same time into my lifestyle.

Have More Baths

I know the whole have a bath for self-care is a cliche. But its a cliche for a reason. I love lighting a candle and easing myself into a hot bath. I could happily just lie in a bath for hours. Sometimes I take a book or use the time to listen to a podcast or just switch off in the warmth of the water. Baths are something I enjoy and want to make more time for this year, especially in the winter months.

Start Journaling

I’ve been a bit reluctant about journaling in the past, but last year I took a few courses which included journaling points. These really helped me to focus my thoughts and work things out on paper. Turns out I was wrong and journaling is an incredibly useful process. I’ve also been doing a little gratitude journalling over Christmas and its helped change my mindset around what I have and want I need/want. I think the first step of the plan will be to buy myself a pretty notebook and looking for some prompts online to get me started. (If you know of any please let me know)

Facial Rolling

So I’m very behind with this beauty trend but I received a quartz roller over Christmas and it was love at first roll. I’m not really sure what I’m doing so will need to do a little research on how to use it properly. But right now I’m enjoying using it first thing in the morning. The cold quartz feels so good on my tired, slightly puffy morning skin. Especially around my eyes. It’s like giving myself a mini facial every day and definitely something I want to incorporate into my routine. (This is the Quartz Roller I have if you want to try it)

More Time Outdoors

My dog is pretty good an ensuring I get outside every day. But I’d like to increase the time I spend outdoors if I can. I actually really enjoy wrapping up for a walk on a cold winters day. So I want to keep this up and get outside for a proper walk at least once a day. I also want to head out to the woods more. I just love it there, it’s always so calm and peaceful under the trees. It’s also a far more enjoyable walk than a trip through the muddy fields behind our house.

Less Netflix More Books

This final habit is pretty self-explanatory I want to cut back on the time I spend in front of the TV and focus on reading (or anything else) instead. Netflix makes it far to easy to binge watch and before you know it you’ve wasted hours watching an entire series. We all know that isn’t good for us. I want to swap Netflix for books and increase my reading this year. I definitely feel more relaxed if I spend the evening reading instead of watching TV so want to make this a habit for 2019.

Will you be adding new self-care habits to your routine this year?

Using a facial roller is super helpful for deflating puffiness, and I’ve found that using it both at night and in the morning gives the best results. My understanding is that you are supposed to always roll in an upward and outward motion – there are lots of videos/gifs online to demonstrate.

You mentioned trying to stretch the previous month’s pay – thankfully, much of the best self-care is free!

Yes, thankfully most self-care is free 🙂 I’ve been watched a few videos on how to use a roller properly and trying to focus on the upwards and outwards motion. It’s become a lovely addition to my routine and is so relaxing.

I’m also trying to read more this year. I have a book by my bed which I try to read most nights and a book on my kindle which I read at lunchtime at work. It’s working so far and I have plans to read many more in the coming months as like you it gives me a sense of calm.

So happy it’s going well for you. I’ve been reading in bed too which is so much better than turning on the TV as well as trying to read during my screen free time throughout the day. Good luck with your plan to read more this year.

I have all the same as you ..haha!! I just started facial rolling as well 🙂 I want to make sure to say “no” to commitments that I’m not I’m aligned with. I want to slow down more and also minimize more of my possessions to help create my space in my life emotionally and physically.

I’m intrigued by facial rollers – they look so interesting and really want to try one out. I love the thought of waking up and having it to depuff my eyes, sounds lovely!!
