One of my favourite ethical fashion brands People Tree has collaborated with the Victoria and Albert Museum to create 2 mini capsule collections Tulip and Seed. The People Tree V&A collection is based on dress fabrics produced by the Calico Printers Association, Manchester in the 1930s.
The collection takes inspiration from the 1930s referencing the elegant style of the time with a modern twist. Think romantic long lean shapes and subtle ruffle details.
“The collection grew out of research in to the V&A’s national collection of textiles and fashion. People Tree has kept the authenticity of the original designs but it’s brilliant to see how they translate to contemporary designs. It is an extremely well-conceived collection that has been fantastic to work on.” Amelia Calver, V&A Licensing Research & Development Manager.
I love how People Tree has developed in recent years and it’s great to see them creating a forward thinking collection like this.
As with everything People Tree create the V&A collection is ethically produced from sustainable fabrics. The seed print (shown above) collection consists of a ruffle dress, ruffle back shirt, coat dress and wide leg trousers. All of which are made from soft organic cotton grown without harmful pesticides and fertilisers.
The tulip print (shown below) collection consists of a ruffle back jumpsuit, smock dress, peplum top and maxi skirt. This collection is made with Tencel, a luxury cellulose fibre made from wood pulp. I have a few things made from Tencel and would describe it as the perfect combination of silk and cotton. It’s a lovely fabric to wear and it very flattering.
Both capsule collections are produced by Creative Handicrafts in India. Creative Handicrafts helps low-income women in the slums of Mumbai achieve economic independence by creating training and jobs.
I have my eye on the seed print shirt which will be perfect for my autumn capsule wardrobe. The People Tree V&A collection is available on www.peopletree.co.uk. Alternatively, there are a few pieces available at John Lewis.
