Gin Explorer

Gin tasting with Gin ExplorerWhen my husband is home Friday night is date night in our house. We’ve been trying to save money recently (we have big plans for the house which cost a lot!) so I’m always on the look out for creative and cheap ideas. Staying in is the most obvious solution when you’re trying to save money. But how do you make your evening different from any other night in front of the TV?

One thing we’ve done is introduce phone free Fridays and honestly its fab. We both turn our phones off (and put them up the stairs) for the night. That way we are actually spending time together rather than scrolling through Instagram or Facebook. You don’t realise how much time you spend ‘just’ checking your phone in the evening until you can no longer check it. But turning off your phone does not turn a night in into date night. It can’t be that easy!

Gin Explorer

Gin tasting with Gin ExplorerThis is where *Gin Explorer comes in. Gin Explorer is a subscription box for GIN! Yes, you read that right a subscription box for Gin. For £24.99 you get a monthly delivery of 4 gins, tonics and mixers as well as other little treats. Each of the bottles is a 50ml taster size which means you can easily get 2 drinks out of each bottle. This meant that both of us got 4 drinks of craft gin and tonic for only £24.99. Don’t know actually how much 8 G&Ts would cost at a bar but it’s a lot more than £25.  It also costs a lot less than going out for a meal which is our standard date night choice.

I do like a good gin and love finding new small batch gins to try. I don’t know why but small batch always tastes better. The Gin Explorer boxes are a great way to find some new Gins to try out. There are so many to choose from its nice to have someone guide you. One of the things I enjoyed most about the box is the guide book/map which took you on a journey. We got to learn about the each gin and where it’s from. Reading the story and the notes of the gin added to the tasting experience.

I wouldn’t go into the taste and notes of each gin because I have no idea what I’m talking about so it wouldn’t make any sense. But I will tell you which one was my favourite. Both of us loved Tinker Gin which is a Spanish-style gin made in Yorkshire. It has a really sweet sherbet taste and is light and fresh. Very different from the gins you’re used too. Would never have thought about creating a sweet gin but it really works. In fact, we will be picking up a bottle of this in the future. A close second was the Stirling Gin which has that more familiar gin taste but with a hint of basil. This made a great G&T.

If you like your gin I highly recommend giving Gin Explorer a go. It makes for a great night in and is a unique way to try out some new gins. You may even find a new favourite.
