In my twenties used to avoid wearing red lipstick. I think it was partly down to having pale skin and dark hair, I didn’t want the snow white look. And also because I didn’t feel confident enough to rock a bold lip. A glamorous red lip always felt a little OTT. However now I’m in my thirties I understand the appeal of a red lip. Who doesn’t want to feel sophisticated and glamorous, even if they’re just popping out to the supermarket?
Red lips are surprisingly easy to wear. Put away any ideas of needing a full face of makeup for a classic red lip. In fact, one of my favourite ways to wear a red lip is with a bare face. Bold red lips can lift your skin and focuses attention to your lips (so people are less likely to see that spot on your forehead). Red lips look great with minimal makeup perfect if you can’t do (or can’t be bothered to do) fancy eye makeup. Just throw on some red lippy and your good to go.
December is the perfect time to try out a festive red lip. Anything red always feels more festive and red lips are no exception. A festive red lip will go with all your Christmas outfits from your classic little black dress to a cheesy Christmas sweater. There is a red out there for everyone, it’s just a case of finding it. I prefer a matte lip with bolder colours, especially red. A glossy red can look a little too much, whereas a matte red feels more classic and sophisticated. I have a few festive red lip options on rotation just now which I want to share with.
5 Of The Best Festive Red Lips
Bourjous Rouge Edition Velvet: It’s Redding Men!
This is the brightest shade of the bunch. It’s very pinky toned in fact it may be verging on too pink for me. This applies quite wet and glossy so you have to be careful not to smudge while it dries. Once it’s dry this doesn’t budge and lasts all day without any topping up, which is very impressive for a red lip. However, it is very drying on the lips to the extent that it can sometimes feel uncomfortable. I’m wearing this the least, I think that’s down to the shade as it’s a little too bright for me. I think I’ll probably get more wear out of this as a summer red lipstick. Buy it here (Boots currently have a free gift when you spend £15 on Bourjous).
NXY Soft Matte Lip Cream: Amsterdam
I love the NXY soft matte lip creams, they are so affordable and really good quality. This goes on really smoothly, feels creamy on the lips and isn’t as drying as most matte lipsticks. I would say this is more a true red without too much pink in it. It’s a really good every day share which isn’t too bold or in your face. I highly recommend this as it’s just such good value. If you want to try it for yourself you can buy it here for only £5.50.
Bourjous Rouge Edition Velvet: Red-volution
This is my favourite shade from the drugstore options. It’s true classic red which feels very glamorous to wear. Like the other Bourjous shade this applies quite wet and dries into a matte finish. However, I don’t find this shade as drying on the lips. Buy it here (Boots currently have a free gift when you spend £15 on Bourjous).
MAC Russian Red
I always find myself going back to Russian Red whenever I want that classic red lip look (you can see me wearing this lipstick in my wedding guest makeup look). This a classic Hollywood red perfect for all those Christmas parties. I also quite like that this is a traditional bullet lipstick as sometimes it’s nice to use a real lipstick rather than a liquid. Like all matte lipsticks, it is a little drying but not as much as others I’ve tried. This is one of my favourite red lipsticks. You can buy it here or at any MAC counter.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil: Cruella
The NARS velvet matte lip pencils are another favourite of mine. They apply so smoothly and feel soft on the lips yet still have that matte finish. This lasts so well on the lips and are just so easy to use as there is no need for any lip liner. The only issue is that because they are pencils you have to sharpen them which wastes some product. The shade is well named as it is that deep classic red you imagine a villain wearing (no snow white lips here). It’s a deeper red shade almost a berry shade so perfect for the cold winter months. You can buy it here where it’s currently on offer for £18 (normally £20)
With bolder colours, you need a good lip liner to team with it. Although most of these lipsticks work well without any lip liner I prefer to use one. My red lip liner of choice is MAC lip pencil in Cherry. This is a really good shade for those classic festive red lips and helps your lipstick last all day. You can purchase MAC Cherry here.
