My Autumn 2015 Capsule Wardrobe

October 23, 2015

Over the past few days, I’ve been busy creating my autumn 2015 capsule wardrobe. The first step in creating my capsule wardrobe was to have a massive clear out of my wardrobe (read my Wardrobe Purge post). The second step was to think about my lifestyle and what I would be doing for the next 3 months. I think when making any changes to your wardrobe you need to think about your lifestyle and plan a wardrobe which suits it (read my post on Building a Wardrobe to Suit Your Lifestyle). As I’ve never created a capsule wardrobe before I turned to the blog Unfancy for advice on how to create a capsule wardrobe. Caroline has created a super helpful Capsule Wardrobe Planner which I printed out and filled in before I even thought about what clothes to include. This exercise was really useful as it forced me to think about my lifestyle, what kind of style I want to have, my favourite brands and colours. The planner also encourages you to think about your go to pieces and most worn outfits. This was useful as it turns out I tend to wear the same items and outfits over and over.

After completing the wardrobe planner I looked at my Yes pile and Maybe piles to select pieces for my wardrobe. Everything from my seasonal pile has been boxed up and put away until I start planning my next capsule wardrobe. I chose not to buy anything new for my capsule, as I hope to identify to gaps in my wardrobe as I go along and was concerned it would give me an excuse to overbuy (which is one of the reasons for starting a capsule in the first place).

Caroline suggests having 37 items (this includes shoes and coats but does not count workout gear, underwear, PJ’s or accessories) 9 pairs of shoes (3 flats, 3 boots & 3 heels), 3 jeans, 3 skirts, 3 shorts, 15 tops and 4 coats/dresses. As I don’t wear shorts I swapped them for dresses. I didn’t manage to get in down to 37 items (this part is surprisingly difficult), I settled for 40 items which was a dramatic change as my wardrobe had around 100 items in it before (not counting shoes, probably closer to 200 if you include shoes).

So what did I pick for my first Capsule Wardrobe?

9 Pairs of Shoes
I chose; black slip on trainers, black heeled booties, Black heeled ankle boots, Black suede heeled ankle boots, Flat black ankle boots, Tan flat ankle boots, Nude heeled booties, Red lace up flats and black slipper shoes
3 Pairs of Jeans
One black pair, One blue pair and a leather-look pair
4 Dresses
Red shift dress, Black oversized dress, Denim dress, Plain black dress
3 Bottoms
One pair of patterned trousers, a black leather look skirt and black skater skirt
17 Tops (2 blouses, 4 t-shirts, 4 button down shirts, 2 sweats, 5 jumpers)

  1. I tried this – even got to this point but I obviously lack the creativity as I found I got so bored within a month or so. I realised that i love shopping and adding new pieces to my wardrobe and missed it too much. So I scrapped the idea and went to town lol. I will be following your posts though to see how you make it work. It is a greay idea.

I'm a little concerned I may have the urge to shop over the next couple of months – especially when it gets closer to Christmas. It's going well so far – but then its only been a week so we'll see. I think putting it on the blog means I have to stick to it

  2. It's a great idea but I don't know if I could ever do this, I'm just not that much of a planner. I will watch your progress with interest though, it's inspiring!

Thanks. It's going well so far. To be honest I picked the clothes I tend to wear anyway so its been pretty easy so far. We'll see how the no shopping thing goes as we get closer to Christmas

  3. I'd love to try this…I think it might benefit me, but I'm scared. I have a whole dressing room and can't comprehend slimming down to 40 items. Im going to follow your progress with interest to see if it gives me the motivation to do it myself ☺

Thanks. 40 items actually works out as more than you think. I've not worn the same outfit twice yet and there are a few items I haven't worn yet. I didn't include any accessories which means I still have choice when it comes to styling up outfits which I think really helps.

  4. I love a Capsule Wardrobe. The red you've chosen is so on-trend and you can't beat a bit of leopard!
